Even though people don't today believe in family planning and treat children as gifts from god. Sons are always preferred than daughters because the daughters are more expensive to bring up. Girls don't earn money for the families and in addition have to be given a lot of dowry when they get married. Sons normally earn money for the family and they care of their parents during old age. In the cities families will usually have around 2 kids, and the villages they will have around 4 so they can have help on the fields.

Marriage of daughters traditionally is arranged with the boys in the same community. Normally the parents of the prospective spouses get together either through a common relative or through a matchmaker.
The tradition is for the boys family would negotiate with the girls family for dowry. The higher the dowry the better the proposal.
If the family has a girl and a boy the girl is supposed to get married first. But if there is a big gap the boy can get married first.
